Maybe at the bottom of this, I'll drop a list of recommended doomsday prepper books. But if you were to put me on the spot and ask me which of the bunch I favor most, I'll have to say it's N.C. Reed's Fire from the Sky series. It's a sprawling saga that, in the course of six, now seven, volumes, charts the building of a community in a post-apocalyptic world. The irony is that Clayton Sanders, ex-Army man, had meant to hunker down at the farm with his family - and only his family (and select friends) - during the coming nuclear holocaust. Thing is, he had it wrong. Yep, he did get a warning about the impending endtimes. But it was a coronal mass ejection - two-and-a-half times the magnitude of the Carrington Event's estimated strength - that devastates rural middle Tennessee and all points outward. Just like that, society's regressed to an industrial revolution era of technology.Clayton Sanders is a pragmatic hombre. As head of CTG* 31, an off-the-books black ops team, Clay had traveled the globe, the rougher parts of it, and seen some sh--. He knows how evil men can be. In this new world order, he wants no truck with strangers. He reasons: how can he take in strangers that may take away food from his family? In these seven volumes, I snickered plenty, on account of the so many times Clay's demand for isolationism gets thwarted, and mostly by his naive, do-gooding family members. Frankly, I'm on Clay's side on this. I feel his epic frustration at how each act of largesse compromises the farm's safety. Heck, Clay got so he couldn't stand his family's stupidity anymore that, in Home Fires (Book 5), he quit being leader. That didn't last too long.Maybe some plot spoilers.N.C. Reed is a long-range plotter who keeps several plates spinning simultaneously. In this Book 7, a few things come to a head, namely that outfit from the south's finally making its big push towards the mysterious middle Tennessee, in an attempt to identify who in heck's been taking out its raiding parties with extreme prejudice. It's a "militia" group from north Alabama what's been committing atrocities on the strength of its messed-up credo: "The strong survive and the weak fall into the dust."Meanwhile, in rural middle Tennessee, in the midst of our homestead's salvage projects, and taking steps to "build down," and listening in with growing concern on Reverend Nutty's poisonous rhetoric over the radiowaves, and depositing in the good will bank by helping the nearby town of Jordan set up their own constabulary and emergency servies, we eyeball a heap of personal dramas going down. Clay and his mom are still feuding. Them dead-eyed killers, Xavier and Brick - who happen to be estranged brothers - are trying to hash out their ish with the resident psychiatrist. Cue, also, the various romantic pairings that continue to develop. To my disgust, it's a plague that comes to infect even the 16-year-old wonder twins, two of my favorite characters. Speaking of the twins, I'm eagerly awaiting the pay-off to Leanne's taking up sword lessons with Tandi and hand-to-hand combat lessons with Xavier.I love this series, man. N.C. Reed is a heck of a writer, and if you think the Fire from the Sky series is a fluke, you'd best check out Odd Billy Todd, which is an excellent stand-alone read. I can't put a finger on exactly what makes this guy such a boss storytelling. He just is. Maybe it's coz he caters to our sense of gratification. There are essentially two sorts of doomsday prepper stories. Either the protagonist is a strict amateur who must learn to survive along the way. Or they're canny preppers with some exhaustive military experience, to boot. Me, I prefer the latter type. Once in a while, I'd get in a mood to read about ignoramuses who don't know what the ef they're doing. Mostly, though, since when I read, I'm putting myself in the shoes of the main character, I'd rather that the MC is a capable so-and-so. And if they're overwhelmingly capable, all the better. Why do you think superhero movies are so much the rage? One of my favorite passages is Pancho's passionate speech as he talked about his brothers-in-arms: "We've worked together, slept together with our backs to one another, ate from each other's plate and drank from the canteen of the man next to us. Some of us have shared blood when needed. We are brothers in every sense of the world." It's not as stirring as Henry V, but it articulates the beyond deep camaraderie shared among those who'd been downrange together. In their corner of a failed nation, practically ain't no one more badass than Clay and his commandos, and that extends to the teenagers they'd trained up and taken in as some of their own. Going into this book, I was hyped up about the face-off between Bossman's tier one operators and the overwhelming forces of the north Alabaman militia. The author does so great at ramping up and sustaining suspense until the blistering showdown. Author's got me conditioned so that whenever I hear radio transmissions like "Bossman, Bossman, this is Home Plate. Urgent traffic," well, I get that exhilarating frisson surging thru. Thank goodness Book 7 ends on a low key cliffhanger. Means there's another book coming.*CTG = Counter-Terrorist GroupOther recommended post-apocalypse prepper books:- N.C. Reed's Odd Billy Todd- Harley Tate's After the EMP series- Bobby Akart's Lone Star / Blackout series- Bruno Miller's Dark Road series- Franklin Horton's The Borrowed World / Locker Nine / Mad Mick series- Nicholas Sansbury Smith's Trackers series- Matthew S. Cox's Evergreen series- C.A. Rudolph's What's Left of My World series

Another great read by NC. Spoiler alert. This one starts with William Shirley the leader of the North Alabama People's Militia. Shirley is mad because they had lost a great deal of personnel and equipment just across the border in Tennessee. Shirley knows North is the only way he can go to get supplies to feed the over three hundred members of his group. To the South are gangs. Gangs that he knows he can't fight. He decides to send another patrol North. This one will be lead by Travis Maitland. Vee will be his second and Dwight will be Vee's second. Dwight is a military man who makes smart decisions. Shirley send the patrol sixty six heavily armed troops in vehicles North.Meanwhile back at the Farms Clay is glad the remainder of his team is now here. They also brought a few people who are more than capable and many have talents the farm needs. He's also glad he got rid of quite a few of the problems that plagued him. Franklin George, Malitha George, Marla Jones and John Webb are now gone to Jordan. Things are quiet right now.Leon has also recovered and is doing well. Patricia is happy with that. Leon is eighty two and doesn't get around much anymore. He does however still rule the roost. Clay is more than happy to report any and all to Leon. Leon is one smart man. He has Janice living with him to take care of him and Brick. Marla is now gone and Leon is glad.Clays efforts in Jordan have payed off as well. They now have a police force and medics. Clay decides they need a militia as Jordan will be the first stop for the Alabama idiots. Dawson, a vet, will lead that effort. There will also be an Op set up at Dottie Greer's house just South of Jordan. This will be the first line of defense for the Town and the Farms.Maitland and his patrol stop for the night much to Vee's disgust. Vee wants to get into Tennessee and confront the killers he knows are there. Maitland is in command though and he makes the decisions. They stop for the night.Tandy, Kevin with Vigil driving are the security for Jake and his crew along with Tee, and Stacey. Two vehicles. One North and one South. Tandi in the South vehicle spots movement. Jake and his crew are stripping cars on the freeway. They need the metal. Tandi spots Maitland's Alabama crew. Four pickups, a large flatbed and a school bus. Tandi thinks there is another vehicle behind the bus.Tandi sends Jake and his workers home ASAP. He and his team mates will be handling Maitland. And handle them they do.Maitland and his Alabama boys got soundly beaten by Tandi and his boys. Twenty three of Maitland's people are dead. He and the rest beat feet for home. Shirley is less than pleased and decides everyone, all three hundred, will be going North. Vee decides he will be going north on his own. A Vee who will get himself and everyone with him killed. Shirley will be heading north and right into a buzz saw. He and his people have never faced anything remotely like Clay and those he commands. Its a move he won't live to regret. So begins one damned fine read. This one has Clay, his team, those living at the farm, Jordan and the militia Dawson trains, the kids on the farm pairing up, Vee and Zach splitting up, X and Byron working out their differences, the Alabama idiots headed North, Reverend Nutworthy and his broadcasts, broadcasts that are becoming increasingly worrying, the people on the farms who are glad to be there, Shane finally telling Kandi he likes her, X, Gordy and others at the forward Op, the forward Op that the militia will be taking over, a Clay who decides its about time Jordan starting taking care of itself, Shirly who attacks and one battle royal where Shirley learns he and his people are a big fat nothing when compared to Clay and his.Five Stars and then some. One great read.

Fire From the Sky is probably one of two of my most favorite series, just as a baseline as where I'm coming from. N.C. Reed is an amazing author that manages to bring to life a scenario that most of us would have a hard time imagining. Using inter-related snippets he has found a way to bring the focus back to individual characters that would in all probability get overlooked in the big scheme of the narrative. This does make for a more in-depth story, and as all of the characters have their own stories, it is a great technique. There certainly is no rest for the wicked, or anyone else in 'Hostile Fire', fast-paced action, great dialogue, amazing character development and a superb story. Definitely deserving a 6.0 out of 5.0 rating.

I pre ordered this and started reading it at 12:05a.m. When it was delivered. Having just finished it 16 hrs later accounting for me falling asleep and traveling home, I am as always wanting more more more. I love this author's grasp of people and their strengths and weaknesses and how they affect themselves and each other. I highly recommend Mr. Reed and can not wait for more of the Sanders saga. Only thing that might be better is another book on his stormcrow series. But this series. It's worth every penny. Thank you Mr. Reed!!!!!!!!

I have been waiting what it seems like forever for this book. When it come out at midnight I stayed up all night reading it. You can tell that this book has move on from the farm to the wider world around them. I can honestly say that the wait was worth it and I can't wait fro the next installment.
